VOLUNTEERING

We Couldn’t Do It Without You

Thank you for your interest in connecting with others as a volunteer at Walk MS. The success of Walk MS is directly related to the wonderful volunteers who help make the event a great experience. We welcome volunteers with a wide range of skills, talents, abilities and interests. Families, corporate groups and individuals are welcome to participate.

Your donation of time is greatly appreciated and needed to create successful events. From pre-event planning to day-of implementation, it takes hundreds of volunteers to make Walk MS successful.

The only requirement we have of you is a sincere desire to help us end MS forever.

Volunteer Positions

Below are examples of some of the available volunteer positions. Some perfect for groups of volunteers, but all can be performed by an individual. Once you register as a volunteer, you will be contacted by a staff member who will give you more details and confirmation of your placement.

Set-Up:

Join us in the morning to set up and prepare the site for the day’s events. Jobs may involve unloading and distributing supplies, setting up tables and chairs, and hanging banners and signage. Set-up may be different at each site and may involve a variety of tasks, but your help is critical in ensuring that everything is prepared before the walkers arrive. Lifting, standing and walking are involved. This job is great for a group of volunteers.

Registration:

Registration volunteers greet and check-in walkers, collect pledge envelopes, distribute t-shirts and provide general event information to walkers checking in. Registration volunteers will be trained on the specific process at mandatory training sessions the morning of the event.

Greeters:

Greeters will welcome walkers and direct them to the appropriate areas at the walk site, ensure registration lines are moving quickly and that walkers have all necessary materials complete before they get to the front of the line, and answer questions as needed. Standing and walking are involved. This job is great for a group of volunteers.

Route Support (SAG) Drivers:

Support walkers along the route, transport walkers and supplies to various locations along the route or to the start/finish area; must be encouraging and enthusiastic to walkers, and report potential emergencies or problems along the route to the site leaders. Requires use of own vehicle and valid driver’s license.

Rest Stop:

Set up rest stop supplies and re-stock supplies as needed. You will create a fun atmosphere by cheering participants as they take a break, and providing food and beverages. Lifting, standing and walking are involved. This job is great for a group of volunteers.

Food Service:

Organize supplies and assist with preparing and serving food to walkers. Lifting, standing and walking are involved. This job is great for a group of volunteers.

General Volunteer:

May have several different assignments throughout the day. Lifting, standing and walking are involved. This job is great for a group of volunteers.

HAM Radio Operator:

Photography:

Assist the Walk MS photographer in taking take team photos, start and finish line photos, and route and celebration photos. You can help teams gather for their photo. Standing and walking are involved.

Finish Line Celebration:

Let's party! This is the time for celebration! Finish line volunteers will cheer walkers across the finish line and celebrate with walkers as they return. This job is great for a group of volunteers.

Tear Down:

Tear down volunteers are all-stars! You will help clean up the site, pack supplies and tents, and remove banners and signage. Lifting, standing and walking are involved. This job is great for a group of volunteers.

Volunteer

Volunteers Can Raise Money, Too.

When you register to volunteer, you will receive fundraising tools through your Participant Center, and when you fundraise as a volunteer, you are eligible for the same great prizes available to walkers. Last year, Walk MS volunteers for the Upstate New York Chapter raised more than $8,000!
Please note: If you volunteered at an Upstate New York Chapter event in 2013, you were given a yellow, volunteer t-shirt. Please bring your volunteer t-shirt to Walk MS. This helps us save on t-shirt costs.
